FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
The ASAT
Z-3 has its
origins in a Leo Fender design from circa
1989. At the request of John Jorgenson, Leo installed three
"Z-Coil" Magnetic Field Pickups (from his newly introduced Comanche)
into an ASAT body with Dual Fulcrum vibrato. John had been
using
his prototype Comanche for recording, but did not want to tour with
it. The hybrid "Comanche/ASAT" was finished in silver flake by
the
same company in Texas that would later do the finishes for theJohn
Jorgenson Signature Model. In late 1997, G&L
"reissued" the
Z-coil pickup version of the ASAT and called it the ASAT Z-3. The
example shown here has the factory optional double bound body, bound
fingerboard, matching headstock, and pearloid
pickguard. It kind of looks like a '57 Chevy. How it sounds
is very subjective since most players either love or hate the Z-coil
MFD. It sure looks cool, though.
