FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

The SC-1 is an exceptionally rare G&L model. It was introduced in mid-1982 and produced through 1983 with a total production run of less than 250 guitars. Most SC-1s were fitted with a hard tail making those guitars with a vibrato tailpiece rarer still. The SC-1 was the least expensive model in the G&L line, however, it utilized the same excellent parts and materials as the higher priced G&Ls. Like its dual pickup sibling, the SC-2, the SC-1 sports a soapbar style single coil pickup that proved to be so good that G&L later used a variation of it on the Broadcaster and ASAT models. Of interest are the large dot fret markers used on the guitar shown here. The neck is dated within a few days of the 1983 SC-3, yet the SC-3 has the smaller dot markers. G&L clearly had an overlap period for using both sizes of dot markers. As with Fender student guitars, it appears that G&L used up the “old” stock items on its student models. So, even though the pro line G&L models had sealed Schaller tuners and small dot markers by mid-1982, the budget models were still using the enclosed, diagonal-cut Schaller tuners and large dot markers into early 1983.
