FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
The Legacy Special was introduced in 1993. As its name implies, it is based on the standard Legacy model with the main differences being its ash body, locking tuners, graphite nut, and the dual blade pickups. The pickups are really what define this model. The dual blade pickups are mini-humbuckers that are the same size as a standard single coil Strat-style pickup. They have much higher output than a comparably-sized alnico slug single coil. The bridge pickup is wound to be hotter than the neck and middle pickups. The dual blade pickups were designed by BBE after Leo Fender's death. However, the original concept goes back even further - the Strat sized dual blade pickup can be attributed to Seymour Duncan in the 1980s while the dual blade humbucker design was used earlier still, by Gretsch with their SuperTron humbuckers.
