The Mitsubishi Ki-67 Hiryu (allied code
name "Peggy") was a medium bomber that was meant to replace the
Nakajima Ki-49. It was heavily armed and fitted with armor plating and
self-sealing fuel tanks making it one of the sturdiest of Japanese
bombers. It outperformed allied medium bombers with respect to range,
manoeuverability and speed. Unlike the heavy allied aircraft, the Ki-67
was very agile even at low airspeeds. It could serve as a torpedo
bomber in addition to being used for level bombing. The Ki-67 shown
here is a Type I which entered service in October 1944. Mitsubishi made
767 Ki-67 aircraft before the war ended in 1945.
