FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

Ampeg’s Portaflex series amplifiers were extremely popular. They were relatively compact and the flip-top head made for easy and safe transportation. In addition, the ported designs of the Portaflex cabinets were acoustically efficient and had remarkable tone. The “X” suffix denoted that the amp was for “universal” use, i.e. guitar, bass, keyboards, or accordion. At 50 watts, the larger X series models were more powerful than other Portaflex amps. Some models, like the B-18-X were equipped with a high compression horn for additional upper range frequency response. This particular amp is one of the last to come with the famous blue check covering since almost all Ampegs were covered with smooth black vinyl by 1967, the year the model was discontinued.
