FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
The ASAT Bass Signature
shown here is an
interesting transitional example from the BBE period. The new
owners of G&L made sweeping changes almost immediately after
taking
over the company in November 1991. This bass has a Leo-era
slab
body with output jack plate, but the neck is from early 1992 and has
different tuner posts (satin finish with shoulder vs. polished aluminum
conical), a semi-gloss neck finish (Leo-era necks were high gloss and
later BBE-era necks were satin), and
a scooped contour behind the nut. This bass retains the
thin
veneer fingerboard of the Leo-era, but later in 1992 BBE switched to
a thick veneer board. By 1993 the fingerboards were slab
cut. Most
importantly,
the BBE-era ASAT Basses (and L-2000s) used a different preamp labelled
as
Version 1.0 on the circuit board. This circuit uses a different op-amp
and a series/parallel humbucking switch in place of the former coil
splitter. This results in a different sounding ASAT
Bass. Around 1999, G&L
revised the preamp once again (Version 1.1) using the original Leo-era
op-amp
and similar circuit, but retained the series/parallel selector.
