FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

G&L offered a vibrato tailpiece as an option on the ASAT Classic from the late 1980s through 1991. Very few were made during this period and probably only a few left the factory after the BBE takeover. In order to fit the standard G&L Dual Fulcrum vibrato assembly to the guitar, a modified bridge plate was needed to clear the vibrato plate and studs. The guitar shown here was custom-made two years after the discontination of the ASAT Classic with a G&L vibrato unit. Not only was the guitar equipped with a wiggle stick, but it was fitted with an ebony fingerboard at a time when neither feature was a factory option. The fingerboard is also unique in that it is a thick, curved veneer. During the Leo Fender era, G&L guitars with separate rosewood or ebony fingerboards used thin, curved veneers. BBE had switched to flat, slab fingerboards relatively early in 1992 making the ebony board on this guitar an interesting anomoly.
