FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
G&L introduced the CLF Research line of instruments in 2017 as a way to bring back models from G&L's past (Skyhawk, L-1000) as well as moving forward with some of Leo Fender's concept designs, such as this Doheny V12. Specifically, Doheny V12 uses large format MFD humbucking pickups. The idea of a Jazzmaster-size humbucking pickup for the Doheny was intriguing to Dave McLaren (president of G&L) and his brother, Johnny, especially since there was an early example of just such a pickup in Leo Fender's laboratory at G&L. In March 2018, prototyping began for a new MFD humbucker that fit under the Doheny/Jazzmaster-sized pickup covers. While not a new idea, the catalyst for using series/parallel/coil split switch came directly from a prototype F-100 pickup designed by Leo Fender. Other early 1980s throwback features include early 1980s style control knobs, vibrato arm, black crinkle finished metal pickguard, and large metal string retainer. The end result is a versatile guitar that fits well in the pantheon of G&L models with MFD humbucking pickups. The model gets its V12 moniker from 1) the 12 pole pieces in each pickup and 2) the pickups looked like the cylinder blocks (or cylinder heads?) from a V-12 engine according to Johnny McLaren. The guitar shown here is from the first production batch of Doheny V12s.
