FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

The June 1988 G&L price list shows the L-5000 to have a target delivery date of July 1988 and it was to be fitted with a preamp (L-5000E). The bass didn't arrive until the end of that year and it didn't have a preamp. It was on the 1989-92 price lists and was available with a maple or ash body in black, red, white, sunburst and Viking Blue. The bass shown here has the maple body option, but someone in the finish department didn't read the price list as it is Bahama Blue not Viking Blue. G&L needed to address the extra tension from the low B string, especially since a standard 4-string neck was being used without benefit of a second truss rod or carbon fiber rods for reinforcement. Instead, the hard rock maple wood was carefully chosen, quarter sawn for maximum strength, and given a slightly chunkier profile.
