FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
The Gretsch 6122 was introduced in 1958 in response to Chet Atkin's request for a guitar with more sustain and less feedback. The achieve these goals, the guitar featured the all-new "Electrone" sealed body with trestle bracing and was fitted with a brass nut. The 1958 version was reissued in a couple of iterations beginning in the 1990s with the Country Classic I. This model had many inaccuracies with body shape (1970s style), bracing (waffle bracing), and pickups (ceramic magnets) just to name a few. In 2003, under design direction from Fender Musical Instrument Corp, the 6122 Country Classic I was revised and renamed 6122-1958 Country Classic. The body shape was more accurate and used vintage-accurate trestle bracing and brass nut. But there were still plenty of inaccuracies, most notably, a body depth of 2.75 inches instead of 2.25 inches. Interestingly, when Gretsch reached an endorsement deal with the Chet Atkins estate in 2007, they changed the plain "Gretsch" pickguard to the Gretsch "Chet Atkins signpost" pickguard. While vintage accurate, it was only used on the earliest 1958 6122 models along with plain Filter'Tron covers and pickup surrounds, and wide Bigsby handle.
