FACTOIDS & TRIVIA
With its intermediate body depth, all-maple construction with soundpost, and HB-1 pickups, the X-170 is perhaps one of the best sounding and versatile models designed by Guild. The model specifications saw minor changes over the course of its production life. From 1985-87 the bridge was made of ebony and transitioned to rosewood during 1988. Also in 1988, some X-170s were fitted with 5-piece maple necks instead of 3-piece. The pickguard used from 1985-98 was a black-white-black plastic unit that covered the treble side of the pickup bezels. Sometime in 1998-99 the pickguard was changed to 1-ply black plastic with a gold script Guild logo that was cut completely around the pickup bezels. As with the Starfire series, the HB-1 pickups were replaced by Seymour Duncan SD-1 humbuckers in 1994 followed by Fender-made humbuckers sometime in 1999. And in its final years, a third finish color (Tennessee Orange) was offered as well as an optional Bigsby tailpiece. A 1998 hangtag shows the Bigsby-equipped model as the X-170B while the 2001 price list shows it as the X-170T. Confusing isn't it?
