By late 1992 BBE switched from the veneer rosewood fingerboard used by Leo Fender on his G&Ls to a slab rosewood board. The main reason for the change from veneer to slab was economics; slab boards are cheaper to make and have less wasted wood. The Legacy below has a slab fingerboard, but also has a couple of unusual features. First, it has an 11-screw pickguard instead of the usual 8-screw pickguard. Second, the serial number is located on the bridge instead of on the neck plate. G&L routinely used bridge serial numbers from 1980-82, but then switched to stamping the serial numbers on neckplates from 1983 to 1997. In early 1993, G&L had run out of neck plates with serial numbers and, in order to keep production moving, used some leftover bridges from the early 1980s. According to G&L, less than 40 guitars left the factory with these old bridges. The serial number on this guitar indicates that bridge was manufactured around 1981.
