FACTOIDS & TRIVIA

The ultra-light empress wood body on this particular Doheny is, like East Indian Walnut, non-cataloged. Empress produces a lighter guitar than alder or ash which is particularly nice for a large, offset-body guitar. Moreover, empress is a resonant tonewood and the light weight does not adversely affect the Doheny's tonal capabilites. The sound is bit like the G&L ASAT, but with a scooped midrange. It works especially well for power pop, indie pop and, yes, surf music, but can rock out with the aid of a boost or distortion pedal. This particular Doheny sports a 1959 Jazzmaster-style, gold anodized aluminum pickguard. G&L does not offer this pickguard as an option, but sometimes fits them on the Doheny when they think it will enhance the cosmetic appeal of the guitar. It also provides some additional shielding just like the metal guards on G&Ls from the 1980s. In addition, the gold pickguard combined with the Old School Tobacco Sunburst finish create a first-glance illusion of a 1959 Jazzmaster (which is very cool).
