G&L set up their Custom Shop in December 2017 and their first offerings showcased a month later at the 2018 Winter NAMM show. The Custom Shop offers more options than are available for regular G&L models. For example, the Doheny shown here has a semi-hollow body made of okoume with an ash top and the controls are rear loaded. The volume control is locate one half inch closer to the bridge pickup compared to the volume location on the standard solidbody version.The F-hole shape is Fender Thinline style instead of the usual G&L style. The neck and fingerboard are made of roasted (torrified) flame maple. Torrification is done under vacuum to remove mositure and other volatiles driven out of the wood from the heating process. The end result is a more stable, but not stronger, piece of wood with unique aesthetics. Unfortunately, if the torrification is not done properly (baking too long for instance), the wood becomes brittle. Enough about roasted wood! While the Custom Shop will go pretty far "out of the box", there are limits to what they will do. This Doheny is wild enough, thank you. A couple of other cool things about the Custom Shop guitars is that they put a laser-cut logo inlay on the back of the headstock and they come in a G&L Custom Shop case. The Custom Shop was managed by David Brown from its inception in 2017 until mid 2020 and this guitar was either built or overseen by Mr. Brown, who signed the build sheet.
